Cupping

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is a traditional East Asian medical treatment that has been used for thousands of years to support circulation, relieve pain, and restore balance in the body. In an acupuncture clinic setting, cupping is used as a therapeutic medical technique—not a cosmetic or wellness trend.

By creating gentle suction on the skin, cupping encourages the movement of blood, fluids, and energy, helping the body release tension, stagnation, and deep-seated tightness.

How Cupping Works

During cupping therapy, specialized cups are placed on the skin to create a controlled vacuum. This suction gently lifts the tissues, allowing fresh circulation to flow into areas that may be tight, inflamed, or poorly perfused.

Unlike massage, which compresses tissue, cupping works by decompressing the area. This makes it especially effective for chronic muscle tension, restricted movement, and pain that feels deep or “stuck.”

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping is a traditional method in which a brief flame is used to warm the air inside a glass cup before it is placed on the skin. As the air cools, a vacuum is created, producing gentle suction.

Fire cupping is safe when performed by a trained and licensed acupuncture professional. The flame never touches the skin, and the cups are placed for a controlled amount of time based on your condition and sensitivity.

Fire cupping is commonly used for:

  • Muscle pain and stiffness

  • Neck, shoulder, and back tension

  • Cold or tight muscles

  • Chronic pain patterns

  • Respiratory congestion

More Information

Cupping often leaves circular marks on the skin that may range in color from light pink to deep purple. These marks are not bruises and do not indicate tissue damage.

The color and duration of the marks provide clinical information about circulation and stagnation in the area treated. Most marks fade within a few days to a week, depending on the individual.

What the marks mean

Cupping therapy may help to:

  • Relieve muscle and joint pain

  • Reduce inflammation and stiffness

  • Improve circulation and tissue healing

  • Release chronic tension and adhesions

  • Support immune and respiratory health

  • Reduce headaches and stress-related pain

  • Promote relaxation and nervous system regulation

Many patients experience a sense of lightness, improved movement, or deep relaxation following treatment.
