Fibromyalgia Introduction Series by Lotus Spring Acupuncture & Wellness Inc.

Imagine feeling old and cold. Imagine everything hurting and being afraid of cold weather. Imagine it hurting to stand up and having general aches and pains associated with aging. Now magnify that and bring that level on any age. This creates an understandable cycle of pain and depression for anyone at any time and any age. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a tropic hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. The anterior pituitary gland is what regulates several physiological processes including stress, growth, reproduction, and lactation. The hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) is what controls it. When Dysregulation of the HPA axis occurs, it is a symbol of several psychiatric disorders, including depression and substance-abuse disorders which all could and can affect the ACTH which is regulating cortisol and androgen production.

This imbalance in the brain and body can cause this type of fibromyalgia to be associated with low libido or sexual dysfunction, nighttime urination, long-term depression and the fear response. For those of you who have never experienced or know what the fear response is; it arises from the perception of danger leading to confrontation with or escape from/avoiding the threat (also known as the fight-or-flight response), which in extreme cases of fear (horror and terror) can be a freeze response or paralysis. The endless cycle that circulates throughout the body can also cause symptoms such as lumbar pain, low body temperature, and long-term depression. However, these are more common in men around andropause.

The treatment strategies that can be associated with this type of fibromyalgia would include the tactics to warm the body and regulate a ACTH and cortisol. We could do this through acupuncture and herbal treatments which allow the body to self-regulate itself and promote for a longer-term solution than any other modern western medicine treatments. One way to help keep the aches and pains under control for your lumbar, however, can be done through a heating pad on the lower back. Another way that we strive to combat this is through strengthening the legs to increase full body blood flow, which allows all parts of the human body to regulate the ACTH and cortisol levels. As we’ve treated men and women who have this type of fibromyalgia, we’ve seen great results.
